SEO or Search Engine Optimization. How do those words feel to you?
Maybe you feel your jaw tighten or shoulders tense up? You aren’t sure exactly what those words mean, but you know it is important. But why?
As a blogger, one of the top ways you can bring in fresh traffic to your site is with Google Searches. Yes, social media is powerful and so is an email newsletter, but people finding you on Google can be just as effective and even more consistent in the long run.
So, how can you get started with your SEO? I’m going to tell you.
But first, I want you to take a deep breath and know that everything you are doing right now for your blog and business is amazing! Before in taking more information (even if it’s useful) it’s important to appreciate the work we do and not be hard on ourselves about all we don’t know.
Please don’t beat yourself if you haven’t gotten started with SEO in your business yet. No one is born knowing how to run a business and learning is part of the process. I want you to know that all you are doing right now is awesome!
Ok, the first thing you need to do to step into the world of SEO is understanding what you are trying to achieve. At the end of the day, Search Engine Optimization is just another tool and it can’t create miracles or set itself up. There needs to be a conscious human being on the other end of that, being intentionally about the end goal.
So, before you start, answer these questions:
What kind of people would you like to attract to your site?
What questions are they asking that your content might answer?
What value do you want to provide to your audience?
These questions are meant to ground you in your purpose and the specific persona that you want to attract. This is going to help you when you start to collect keywords and build your SEO strategy.
Once you feel centered in your mission and who you want to come to your website, you are ready to set up a tool that will help you understand the specific keywords people searched before getting to your site. This free tool is called Search Engine Console and it was created by Google. You can access it by going here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/.
The setup is fairly simple: you need to type in your domain and then verify that it is your site by using one of many methods. This could be through Google Analytics or place the specific code on your website that the Search Console gives you.
After you’ve verified your domain, you will start collecting keywords. Like Google Analytics, it might take a couple of weeks, depending on how much traffic you get, to start and see keywords in your Google Search Console.
Starting to get a sense of what keywords people are already finding us on can be powerful but make sure there is a strategy behind those words. Being focused in our marketing efforts is the key to success in business, as well as not getting overwhelmed and eventually burnt out.
